Saints Peter and Paul
School 2003-2004 Technology Plan
Vision
The
world is continually changing, and in our society today technology plays a
vital role in communication, creative expression, production and research.
Computers and supporting technologies have become a. necessary part of our
day-to-day activities, and will become increasingly more relevant in both
educational and corporate environments. Technology is an integral part of
functional living.
The mission of private education is to prepare
students to function in and contribute to society. Students must have ready
access to information that will allow them to discover, gather and analyze information
to will help them to acquire knowledge, as well as develop critical thinking
and problem solving skills. Proficiency in using technology will enable
students to enhance their learning while in school and will also prepare them
for active roles in the workplace, and in community and personal arenas.
Educating students and teachers to maximize their use and understanding of
computer and technological tools must be a vital part of our school curriculum.
The goal of the Technology Plan at SPPS is to help
students and teachers recognize and utilize computers and other appropriate
technological applications as tools to accomplish specific purposes. It
reflects our desire to give students and teachers an avenue through which they
can expand their base of knowledge, communicate, problem solve, and share
knowledge and ideas among themselves and with the broader global community.
The
major focus of the technology plan at SPPS is to provide a foundation of skills
that will allow students and teachers to become creative users of technology
now and in the future.
The
plan was designed:
· to encourage students and teachers to use computers to
acquire basic skills
· to begin accumulating a repertoire of skills and
information through which they can use technology to aid in the production of
written work
· to further communication among students and educators
· to gather, analyze and
synthesize information in creative ways
to share
information with other learners and educators through presentations, interactive
multimedia and sharing and displaying of projects both within our school and
globally through publication of student work via the Internet.
Students
at Saints Peter and
Providing
opportunities for learning and acquiring technological skills to enhance
learning is imperative to the success of our technology plan. Students will
learn in a cooperative and collaborative atmosphere.

application for a specific purpose (skill improvement, creativity, research or
productivity).
Students
in grades 1-4 will select and use an appropriate application for a specific
topic of study. Students may select Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word, Microsoft
Encarta, or
Third
grade students will be able to create a written project, such as writing a
story, by using Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word and/or
Students in grades 5-8 will be proficient in all
writing programs. Students will be able to create a multimedia presentation
about a specific topic through the HyperStudio or
Microsoft Power Point program. Students in all grade levels will use word
processing to support language arts instruction and to integrate writing in
other subject areas. Students will use the Accelerated Reader and PerfectCopy programs to increase their reading
comprehension and grammar knowledge.
Students in grades 8 will learn how to maintain the school/parish web
page through the guidance of the Network Administrator.
Goal 2 - Keyboarding
Students
at our school will demonstrate proficiency in using input devices (keyboard and
mouse). Students in the primary grades will use various keyboarding programs to
become familiar with the placement of letters on the keyboard. Students in
grades 3-4 will master the homerow keys and be able
to pass a proficiency test of 10 wpm's by the end of
fourth grade. Students in the intermediate grades will master the keyboard and
be able to pass a proficiency test of 15 wpm’s by the end of eighth grade.
Goal 3 - File Management
Students
at our school will enter text using word processing applications, make changes,
save and retrieve files and print a hard copy. With minimal assistance,
students will name their file, save their document to the correct file on the
fileserver or disk and print a hard copy. Fourth grade students will be able to
independently create a written document using their own choice of software
including Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word and/or
Goal 4 - Library
Students at our school will demonstrate the use of an automated
card catalog to find materials by key words, title, subject and author.
Instruction and evaluation will be done by the librarian. Third grade students
will be able to use the card catalog with assistance to locate materials by
subject, author and title. Fourth grade students will be able to use the card
catalog independently to locate materials by subject, author and title. They
will be able to do keyword and/or subject searches.
Goal 5 - Multimedia
Students at our school will create and incorporate
graphic images using computer graphic tools, clip art and/or scanned images.
Students will be encouraged to use clip art in creative ways and for a specific
purpose and use scanned images in content-appropriate ways. Students in grades
1-2 will be encouraged to explore graphic tools, changing colors, making
patterns and creating pictures.
Students in grades 3-4 will use graphic tools to
create art for a specific purpose such as illustrating a story, making a map, a
diagram or brochure, and/or creating a slide show to show a concept or convey
an idea. Third grade students, with assistance from the teacher, will be able
to use graphics to enhance written work in Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word
and/or
Goal 6 - Computer Knowledge
Students at our school will utilize basic computer
terminology. Students in grades 1-8 will be expected to progressively expand
their understanding and use of basic computer terminology including the
keyboard, mouse, screen/monitor, disk, CD-ROM, CPU, hard drive and printer.
Goal 7 - Internet
Students at our school will use the Internet with
guidance from the network administrator and/or classroom teachers. Students in
grades 1-2 will be introduced to the Internet as a source of information.
Students in grades 3-4 will use the Internet with guidance to access
